カンテツのaftermass
先週木曜日の完全徹夜の影響がまだつづいているような気がします。天気も悪いしどうも調子がでてきませんね。

あのdeCODE社ってこけてしまったのでしょうか。アイスランドもこけたしなー。
Newsweekの記事を読んでびっくり。(The World’s Most Successful Failure)
毎日新聞に妙な記事が掲載されていました。この二人の記者は何か病院に恨みでも持っているのでしょうか？ 爆弾騒ぎ、インシュリン事件すべてそこで働いている医者のせいだといっているともうのですがこんなことはあるはずはないと思います。変なの。
カラー図解 アメリカ版 大学生物学の教科書 第1巻 細胞生物学 (ブル-バックス)を書店で立ち読みしました。買おうかと思ったのですが英語版を買う方がいいと思い直し家で調べると英語版は高い、ぼくに直接必要のない内容が含まれていると思いamazonで注文としました。まだ届いていません。
イラストも綺麗でヨイと思いました。分子生物学も細胞生物学も10年前とかなり様相が変わっています。時間があれば臨床医のみなさんも読んでみたらどうでしょうか。幸い新書サイズなので持ち運びに便利です。

Google 英文ライティング: 英語がどんどん書けるようになる本
googleの検索窓にワイルドカードを使った英文の断片を入力することで英文チェックをするという比較的に古典的な方法の解説書です。
例のやつかと思ったのですが立ち読みをしているうちに意外といいかもと思い直し結局買いました。ざっと読んでみると”気付き”もあり値段の価値はあるなと思った次第です。

Natureのweb siteに面白いnewsがありました。

ドイツでは７月から
someone applying for a year’s funding will be able to include only two publications closely related to the proposed project and a maximum of five other papers illustrating their scientific career.
となるのだそうです。良い申請書を提出するだけなら簡単かもしれません。ghost writterを頼めばよいのです。その申請の実現可能性を担保するのはやはり過去のpublicationでしょう。二つで十分とも言えますがそれで大丈夫なのかという議論もあります。結局評価者の実力が問われるということになると思います。
“It is quality, not quantity, which matters,”
とありますがこんなことはわかりきったことなのです。問題はどうやって質を評価するかですから。
スイーピングは無酸素運動に近いんじゃなくてたぶん無酸素運動
カーリングでストーンを投げることをスイーピングというのだそうですが
スイーピングは、息を止め、全体重をブラシに預ける力業。数十秒間潜水するような無酸素運動に近い
なのだそうです。

例のアラバマ大学殺人事件ですが今日のNew York Timesに興味深い記事が出ていました。

犯人の科学者としての能力に踏み込んだ考察になっています。
“Perhaps the saying ‘There’s a fine line between genius and insanity’ has a lot of truth to it,”
というのような反応が当初あったのですが結局
In fact, scientists who have looked at Dr. Bishop’s résumé said they saw no evidence of genius, no evidence of a cure for diseases like A.L.S., no evidence that she even could have gotten tenure at a major university.
こんな話になってきて

She had nothing published in 2007 and 2008, and during her six years at the university in Huntsville she published three papers that appeared to be original research articles, none of them in major journals — often a requirement for tenure.

とかとも言われてしまう始末。
最後には
Joanathan D. Moreno, a professor of medical ethics and the history and sociology of science at the University of Pennsylvania, thinks reactions have to do with a long tradition that goes back to Plato. The idea, he said, is that someone who is very intelligent is assumed to be “morally wise.” And that makes it hard to reconcile the actions of Amy Bishop, with her Harvard Ph.D., her mantle of scientific brilliance.
こんな話で終わります。
大学の先生の皆が皆“morally wise.”とは到底言えませんよね。”サボったり”、”ウソ”ついたりする人はいますよ。身近にいると困りますけど。
