京都は観光客でいっぱいです。

昨日の夜、夜11時頃牛丼を食べ終わって交差点で信号待ちをしていると自転車に乗った外国人が何かぼくに向かって手を振っていました。ぼくは音楽を聴いていたので言っていることが聞き取れなかったのですが、earphoneを外してみると、How can I get to Sanjo-O Hashi?とと尋ねていたのでした。河原町丸太町の交差点だったのですが…下って行くと三条にでるので左に曲がると答えるとありがとうと立ち去りました。昨日何かあったのでしょうか？

というくらい観光客があふれています。

坂本龍一さんの北米ツアーの音源が iTunes storeで公開されています。

おもしろいのはツアーの開催都市ごとに人気の曲が違うことです。

Seattle(10/30)は merry cristmas mr.Lawrence

Boston(10/20)ではhappyend

New York(10/18)ではほとんどすべてが人気

Tronto(10/24)はこれまたほとんどが人気

となっています。

アルバムとして買うのなら New YorkかTorontoなんでしょうか。
たぶん日本ツアーと同じで最後に”best版”が出ると思いますがそれまで待つのか吉かな。

Transparency showcases strength of peer review

という”コメント”が掲載されていました。

EMBO Journalが投稿論文の査読の透明性を高めるために様々な改革を行っているようで EMBO JのChief Editorが大いに語るという形式の小文です。

まずEMBO Jでは掲載を断った論文のその後も結構丹念に追っかけています。

For example, only 1% of manuscripts rejected in 2008 ended up in journals with an impact factor two points or more above that of The EMBO Journal; and only 9% have a citation rate higher than the average paper in the journal.

なのだそうです。

これっておもしろい調査です。

また査読のプロセスを公開するようです。というかすでに一部の論文では公開されています。

これはぼくは大歓迎です。理不尽な査読は多いと思います。そもそもその査読をするほどその分野に精通していないと思われるような査読が多すぎます。

またJournalの特徴ーこれにはいわゆる”格”も含みますーを理解していない査読もあると思います。たとえばJournal of Anesthesiaに投稿された論文へのコメントとAnesthesiologyに投稿された論文へのコメントは内容が同じだとしても自ずと違ってくるべきだろうと思っています。
“発見”を重視して掲載していく雑誌があってもよいし完璧な論文を掲載することが目的の雑誌もあっていいと思います。

公開によって

Another appeal of this path was that peer review is rarely formally taught, yet so much depends on it. We hoped that the peer-review process files might serve as a teaching tool. Finally, a clear potential benefit was to fortify the peer-review process. Referees might feel compelled to take extra care when writing their report, as the report would be published, albeit anonymously.

のような効果が期待できると書いています。これはありますよね。査読ってどうすればいいのかなかなか実は解りません。公開によってこういう風にやりとりするのかと言うことを学ぶ機会ができるのはありがたいです。

In line with some other journals, we have also implemented another change: we now explicitly prompt reviewers to declare the common practice of delegating peer review to others in the lab. We request that reports are vetted by the invited referee and that co-referees are named. We regard this as an essential component of good mentorship.

これはよい制度ですね。ぼくは自分に依頼のあった論文査読を他人ー例えば院生ーに外注してもらうということははしませんが、そういうことをする研究室があることもよく知っています。

ぼくの気持ちとしては一生懸命仕上げた論文をその院生が立派な見識を持っているとしても自分が見たことも話したこともない院生に査読されるのはいやだと著者は思うのではないかということが理由です。査読の頻度が比較的に低いと言うことも理由の一つかもしれません。自分で何とかやり繰りできると言うことです。でも若い人の教育には大変役に立つと思います。それにクレジットがつけばなおさらやる気は出て来ると思います。

If peer review benefits from anonymity, why not also mask the author’s identity (‘double-blinded’ review)? We remain interested in this possibility, but fail to see how to implement it without adding delays or requesting anonymized manuscripts for initial peer review (removal of author names does not suffice to anonymize a manuscript from one’s peers).

これは実際には難しいと思います。以前日本麻酔科学会の機関誌Journal of Anesthesiaはこのやり方を採用していましたが、頭隠して尻隠さずで全く意味が無かったと思います。引用論文などで著者、少なくとも著者の研究グループがすぐに解ってしまうのです。materials and methodsなどでは自分らの過去の論文を引く事がほとんどだと思いますのでそこらが手がかりとなってすぐに解りますよね。匿名査読用のバージョンを作るのは大変です。

またぼくは研究の継続性などを評価したいと思います。そのためには著者名が明らかになっている必要があります。あの人たちの研究なのだからここら辺の解析は信用できるがこの部分はどうも怪しいのではないかというような事を考えるわけです。ポッと出の人たちの研究はやはり慎重に見ていかなければなりませんし慎重にデータを見ていきます。

とにかく査読について考えたい人は必読だと思います。 Natureがこういう文を掲載する意義は大きいです。

びっくりしました。すごくしっかりとポイントが挙げられているからです。こっちも読んでみてください。

最後に英文誌なのに日本語でのコメントを認めるのはやめた方がいいと思います>某学会の機関誌

査読の透明性も何もあったもんじゃありません。査読のプロセスが公開されても外国人読めないよ日本語。

大体英語も書けない人はちゃんと英文読めているのかも怪しいよー少し言い過ぎかー。関連するエントリー:

またPLoSに代表されるOpen accessをプリンシプルとする雑誌も確実に増えてきています。この場合、著者が結構高額なpage feeを負担することにより雑誌社としては経営的に辻つまを合わせるわけです。
Open accessではない雑誌でも論文の掲載に際してpage chargeを課す雑誌は結構ありその金額も結構高額なものとなっています。特別な追加料金を払うと自分の論文がOpen accessとなるという雑誌も増えてきています。Open accessである論文は確実に引用回数がふえるという研究も存在します。

このような問題をめぐる話題がOpen sesamiというタイトルのeditorialとUS seeks to make science free for allというspecial reportとしてNature（8 April, 2010)に掲載されています。

NatureもPLoS ONEの”成功”に触発されたのかNature Communicationsという雑誌を立ち上げるようです。投稿してみます。

びっくりしたけどApril Foolか

最後もNatureからです。
molecular-gastronomyという研究分野があり、その大御所Dr.Hervé Thisへのインタビューが載っていました。

Why do some meals taste better than others?

The principles of cuisine are love, art and technique: perfect technique without love and companionship is lost. A poor sandwich shared with good friends will taste better than dinner in a three-star Michelin restaurant shared by an arguing couple. Primates generally avoid bitter tastes such as beer. But the sensory punishment of drinking bitter beer is more than offset by the social reward of being in a group.

Are any foods poor candidates for molecular-gastronomy research?

I try not to work on cheese, wine, bread or sausages — the microbiology is too complicated. Onions and carrots are better subjects, but progress is slow. After two PhD projects studying the creation of carrot stock, we are only beginning to understand the molecular diffusion processes involved.

New York Timesにちょっと前に出ていた

こっちもそりゃそうなんでしょうが少しえぐすぎると思いました。

故あって“皮膚は考える (岩波科学ライブラリー 112)” (傳田 光洋)を読みました。
102ページの本なのですが丁寧に書かれていて大変ためになりました。「皮膚電位」の話ははじめて知りました。
同じ著者の“賢い皮膚―思考する最大の“臓器” (ちくま新書)” (傳田 光洋)
も読みました。懇切丁寧さが少し失われて何か都合のよい言い換えればネタ的な話題を集めた本の様な気がしました。より新しい知見が記載されていることは事実と思いますのでそれでもなお読んでかなりヒントを得ることができました。
両者とも読者は一般的な人を想定しているのか引用文献のリストなどはありません。ぼくには残念ー後者ではpubmedで追跡は可能と思いますが…

酸素研究者は

“酸素はからだになぜ大切か―いつも酸素は不足している! (ブルーバックス)” (諏訪 邦夫)

“ミトコンドリアのちから (新潮文庫)” (瀬名 秀明, 太田 成男)

を読むべきだと思う。

「The Housekeeper and the Professor」が取り上げられていました（参照）。ちょっと勘違いな書評のような気もしましたが希有なことです。

原作はもちろん「博士の愛した数式」です。

少し前に「妊娠カレンダー」の英訳がNew Yorkerに出ていたしそのうちノーベル賞とかいわれるかも。

これは誤解を呼ぶと思います。

For that reason, a growing number of Japanese women seem to believe that work as a hostess, which can easily pay $100,000 a year, and as much as $300,000 for the biggest stars, makes economic sense.

Even part-time hostesses and those at the low end of the pay scale earn at least $20 an hour, almost twice the rate of most temp positions.

In a 2009 survey of 1,154 high school girls, by the Culture Studies Institute in Tokyo, hostessing ranked No. 12 out of the 40 most popular professions, ahead of public servant (18) and nurse (22).

Young women are drawn nonetheless to Cinderella stories like that of Eri Momoka, a single mother who became a hostess and worked her way out of penury to start a TV career and her own line of clothing and accessories.

“I often get fan mail from young girls in elementary school who say they want to be like me,” said Ms. Momoka, 27, interviewed in her trademark seven-inch heels. “To a little girl, a hostess is like a modern-day princess.”

Eri Momokaさんとは調べてみると「ももえり」ー「ふかえり」ではないーと呼ばれている大変な実業家のようです。

恐るべし。

今日は麻酔で消耗しました

21時くらいに研究室に戻り論文のrevisionに着手　戦意喪失してreviewerの指示通りに統計をし直したり書き直したりして2時間もかからないうちに終わる。月曜日には送り返しますよT先生。これで通るだろう、常識的には。

学会というかscientific meetingの会場からいろんな電子デバイスを用いて”実況中継が”可能になり実際に行われていている、このような状況は科学の発展にとって良いことなのかそれを阻害するように働くのかといった議論がなされています。

主人公が農薬を浴びて”進化”して町子先生とちょっとうまく行くと調子に乗ってさらに町子先生の気を引こうと農薬を浴び続ける主人公が出てきます。農薬で人も”進化”するのです。

”進化”といえば、抗生物質のみで細菌感染をコントロールできないように抗がん剤でガンを完全にコントロールすることはできない。細菌もがんも”進化”してしまいますから、と言う話があります（参照）。

一週間の研究成果を発表してもらい他のメンバーに意見を出してもらい次の一週間の研究方針を確認するというごく普通なmeetingです。

昼間は臨床をしていますのですぼくは部屋にいませんがlab. meetingには参加しています。

最近は皆の手が確実になってきて結構と言うよりかなりおもしろい実験結果が出てきています。

研究はデータの確実さが命だぜやっぱり。

ここで全部しゃべってしまいたいという衝動を抑えています。

今年の暮れには論文になって結実していることを期待しているというよりほとんどその気になっています。
