昨日の当直は辛うじて昨日のうちに終わり寝たはずなのですが，夜中にPHSが鳴った様な気がして起きてしまいそれ以後眠れなくなってしまいました。一回起きてしまうとやはり当直室は寒く感じられこれでいかんと思い早々に研究室に移動してエアコンのスイッチを入れてオイルヒーターで暖をとっていました。困ったものです。
New York Timesを読んでいたら面白い記事というかエッセイを見つけました。
アメリカの元財務長官でハーバード大学の学長もしたサマーズ氏の”What You (Really) Need to Know“というタイトルです。
時代が変わっているのだから教育システムも変わる必要があるということを主張した文章です。
このエッセーを巡って紙上debate(“English Is Global, So Why Learn Arabic?“)も開催されています。
主張が箇条書きにされているのですが少し引用してみます。(ぼくが一部を太字にしました）
- Education will be more about how to process and use information and less about imparting it. This is a consequence of both the proliferation of knowledge — and how much of it any student can truly absorb — and changes in technology.
- An inevitable consequence of the knowledge explosion is that tasks will be carried out with far more collaboration. As just one example, the fraction of economics papers that are co-authored has more than doubled in the 30 years that I have been an economist.
- New technologies will profoundly alter the way knowledge is conveyed. Electronic readers allow textbooks to be constantly revised, and to incorporate audio and visual effects.

This makes it essential that the educational experience breed cosmopolitanism — that students have international experiences, and classes in the social sciences draw on examples from around the world.
- Courses of study will place much more emphasis on the analysis of data. Gen. George Marshall famously told a Princeton commencement audience that it was impossible to think seriously about the future of postwar Europe without giving close attention to Thucydides on the Peloponnesian War.
まあこれってよく言われることですよね。ちきりん氏の「自分のアタマで考えよう
」でも同じような主張はされています。でもサマーズ氏がこのようにまとめると権威あります。
このエッセーでサマーズ氏は
English’s emergence as the global language, along with the rapid progress in machine translation and the fragmentation of languages spoken around the world, make it less clear that the substantial investment necessary to speak a foreign tongue is universally worthwhile. While there is no gainsaying the insights that come from mastering a language, it will over time become less essential in doing business in Asia, treating patients in Africa or helping resolve conflicts in the Middle East.
と述べているのですがこの部分について紙上debateが行われています。
たぶん近い将来にに日本語をしゃべったり書いたりするそばから英語やフランス語に翻訳されていくシステムができると思います。
留学をしない，しなくてもよい理由をいくら並べてみても栓がありません。当たり前ですが英会話がうまくなるために留学するわけではありません。より広い視野を獲得するために留学するのですから。
Nature Cell Biologyに
The LIMD1 protein bridges an association between the prolyl hydroxylases and VHL to repress HIF-1 activity

という論文が出ていました。これは面白いです。しかしこの論文はぼくらの2001年の論文の解析の途中でもある程度予想されていたような事象だと思います(参照-Web of Scienceの統計では507回引用されたようです。）。
今年も「キアドラ」が届きました。
医学界新聞を読んでいたら”Experimental Design for Biologists“の邦訳「バイオ研究のための実験デザイン -あなたの実験を成功に導くために」が出ているのを知りました。日本語は読んでいませんがよい本だと思います。
昨日，日当直でした。電話が何度か掛かってきた以外に仕事といえるような仕事はしませんでした。
明日から通常通りに戻るので池田に帰るのも面倒なので研究室にいました。
たぶん論文は30篇くらい読みました。5割は某論文sの執筆の準備です。
基礎研究の論文は別として，症例報告二つと臨床研究二つは3月までにカタをつけたいです。
思いついて｢家政婦のミタ｣の動画を探して観ました。ついに最終回もクリアです。ネットってすごいですね。第一回から最終回までありました。
Simplyに家族を大事にしないといけないと思わされました。テレビ番組なのですからあれで十分満足です。
“うらら”役の相武紗季が妙にフけているなと思ったらもう26歳なんですね。今後どんな展開をしていくのでしょうか。そっちが心配になりました。
業務命令以外は話しかけないで下さい。／どうしてもと言うのならお暇を頂きます。
これらのフレーズはどんどんと使っていこうと思いました。
New York Timesを読んでいたらEric Lander氏が取り上げられていました (Profiles In Science | Eric Lander Power in Numbers)。
Collins氏とVenter氏の間に隠れていますがHuman Genome Project (当時のクリントン大統領から”We are here to celebrate the completion of the first survey of the entire human genome. Without a doubt, this is the most important, most wondrous map ever produced by humankind”と評されたprojectです)の立役者の一人だと思います(参照)。
そのLander氏の生い立ちから説き起こしたなかなか興味深い評伝だと思います。Landerって生まれながらの天才というか秀才だったのですね。
Even before the Human Genome Project ended, Dr. Lander was thinking of how to keep what he saw as a wonderful collaboration among scientists going. There were, by his count, about 65 collaborations among young scientists in Cambridge and Boston, all outside the usual channels.
“Something magical had happened,” Dr. Lander said. “People were coming together and taking on really bold problems.”
It may have had something to do with Dr. Lander’s personality. Gus Cervini, an administrator at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston who worked for him for four years, used to call him “the sun.”
“He has this amazing influence or power on people,” Mr. Cervini said. “He had this ability to get people to really think big.
“When the sun shines on you, you feel like you can do anything.”
というように手放しでほめまくられています。”太陽”ってすごい表現ですよね。
この休みに
｢この胸に深々と突き刺さる矢を抜け｣を読みました。読むとわかりますが普通の小説とはだいぶ趣が異なります。｢救い｣がない小説でもあります。何で読んじゃったのかと思いますが読み始めたら一気に４時間くらいで読み切ってしまいました。
この小説で引用されていた累犯障害者も読みました。これはまたまた救いのない話です。
不可能性の時代 (岩波新書)も再読したのですが年末年始は結構暗い気持ちになりました。
家で黙っていたら家内になんで何もしゃべらないのかと云われました。いつもしゃべらないのですが文句は云うのです。それも云わないので気味悪がられたのです。
“Science”の”Areas to Watch”というエッセイで2012年への展望が紹介されています。

Stem-cell metabolismでは
The way stem cells use energy and intermediate metabolites seems to help determine when they differentiate and what kinds of cells they become. In 2012, look for researchers to use large-scale studies of stem cell metabolism to gain new insights into how stem cells regulate themselves in the body—and how scientists might tweak the process in the lab or in patients.
昨年から｢がん｣でも｢幹細胞｣でもなんでもかんでも代謝ですね。
米国の新聞の日曜版というのは日本では信じられないくらいの分量です。New York Timesもその例外ではなくMagazineという長編の記事を集めた冊子が付いて来ます。これはon lineでも読むことができます。
この前の日曜日のmagazineに
“A Drug That Wakes the Near Dead”
というタイトルの記事が掲載されていました。
minimally conscious stateの患者を覚醒させる様々な試みのうち特にZolpidem (商品名Ambien）を用いた方法の詳細な紹介です。一読の価値がある以上に興味深い記事です。
麻酔の専門医資格をお持ちの先生方は当然知っている結構有名な現象だと思いますがこのようなドキュメンタリーになるとまた印象が異なります。

以前「Mendeleyのめざすもの」というエントリーを投稿しました。
紹介したWiredの記事が日本語で読めるようになったようです。
雑誌「週間ポスト」に連載されていた徳州会の徳田虎雄さんのルポが一冊の本にまとまって出版されていました。
「トラオ 徳田虎雄 不随の病院王」です。
カバーに使われている写真をみてぎょっとします。本を読んでもっと驚きます。
現在徳州会系の病院で働いている友人がいます。何度も直接徳田虎雄さんに会ったことがあるそうです。話を聞いているとやはり「トラオ」には人を引きつける何かがあるのだろうと思いました。この本を読んで一端が解ったような気がします。
病室のテレビモニターから系列病院の会議や朝会の様子をチェックできるようになっているのだそうです。ただ者ではありません。
これは読むべきでしょう。
承諾書がどうのこうのといって一向にものごとが進まない某病院にいるのがばからしくなってきますよ。

トラオへのインタビュー（といっても変則的な文字盤をつかったもの）も満載です。
折しも「ムネオ」が娑婆に出て来たそうです。
もう怖いモノ無しでしょうからどんどんやってもらいたいと思います。
